It's been about 3 years since I have been self-employed full-time. Here are some lessons I learned from my first try at running my own agency and some lessons that I have learned working as a Marketing Director.
Hi, I'm Jesse
I'm the owner and founder of Nova Pro Media and I wanted to do a quick intro for those of you that don't know me personally.
I grew up in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and spent the majority of my childhood in Portsmouth, RI. I graduated from Portsmouth High School in 2005. After high school I did a quick stint in community college before I enlisted in the Marine Corps. I served in the Marine Corps from 2006 to 2010 and got out to pursue my education and that's where the real adventure began.
How I Got Here
I bounced around from school to school while I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I landed at the New England Institute of Technology where I completed my Associates Degree in Digital Media Production. It is here where my journey towards marketing truly began.
While I was in school I started taking on clients as a professional video producer. These clients were small businesses and non-profits of many different industries. They were a pleasure to work with but, I began to notice that many of them were hiring me to make videos without a strategy to use the videos after they were completed. This trend intrigued me and I began heavily researching video distribution strategies and began offering this information to my clients to help them see a return from the services that I was providing. This was in mid 2014 and Nova Pro Media was born.
I continued taking on video clients on a part-time basis until I began working at the Naval War College in January of 2015. If I told you what I did there , I would have to kill you 😜. I stayed at the war college and continued doing video production until December 2016 when I saw an opportunity to start taking on clients with Nova Pro full-time.
I became self-employed full-time in January of 2017 and started serving clients. It was going well at first. By May of 2017, I had 4 clients signed with Nova Pro. I thought things were going great (confirmation bias)! What I didn't realize, is I was making huge mistakes that I wouldn't know were mistakes for months to come. In summer of 2018, it was far past obvious that Nova Pro was not going to work out in its current capacity and I had to change tack. Nova Pro had 2 clients at that time and I was working part-time as a waiter at a local restaurant to keep my bills paid. I started looking for full-time employment and in October of 2018 was given a great opportunity to work as the Director of Marketing for an alternative health clinic that served clients all over the world.
I learned so much about marketing in this role. The lessons I learned went far beyond the digital arena and in some cases went far beyond marketing as well. Things were going great at that company until the doors were tragically closed due to family issues within ownership in late October of 2019. This really shook me and I took some time off until January 2020 when I went back to school to study Marketing.
As we all know, in March, shutdowns started occurring and that changed school, business, and everything else in the world. I ended up taking a job as the Director of Marketing for a solar installation company from July 2020 to October 2020 when I was presented with an opportunity that I couldn't pass up. This opportunity would allow me to make another go at taking Nova Pro Media to full-time status again, except armed with new knowledge and lessons learned this time around.
Every Failure Is A Lesson Learned
The lessons that I learned from running Nova Pro the first time are profound. As a marketer, I learned that I have a choice. Either I can have a good understanding of a broad spectrum of topics or I can have a mastered understanding of one topic but, no one can have a mastered understanding of everything. In turn this taught me a valuable business lesson about team building. I can not and will not attempt to provide this extensive and time consuming service on my own. I have a well thought out organizational plan that is currently playing out right before my eyes. We will have new team members joining the team very quickly over the next coming months and I'm excited to see this plan play out and see where it takes me, my team, and the clients that we serve.
